Cold Hardy Grape
Vitis ‘Valiant’ is a cross between the cold-hardy native river grape (Vitis riparia) and the table grape (Vitis labrusca).
In 1960, seed was collected from native Vitis riparia near the northwestern limits of the species’ range in NE Montana and NW North Dakota. Genetic material was selected from individuals identified as “outstanding” because of early fruit maturity, uniform ripening, well-filled clusters, productivity, lack of astringency, and mildew resistance.
South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station and SDSU sought to produce a delicious, high yielding, disease resistant, extreme-cold-tolerant grape that could withstand the difficult growing season of the Dakotas.
Considered cold-hardy to USDA zone 2 or 3 (-40 to -50ºF), ‘Valiant’ is self-fertile and produces abundant blue table grapes that mature early in the season and are prized for their deliciousness as juice or in jellies and jams.
Vines can reach 15-20’ tall by 15-20’ wide. ‘Valiant’ prefers abundant summer sun and a little winter shade. Like frost grapes and Virginia creeper, it occasionally loses a round of foliage to our late frosts but it rapidly recovers to produce even more.
Blooms May-June.
Golden to Orange Fall Colors.
