Our Fire season started almost 2 months earlier than "normal" this summer and it was the hottest summer any of us can recall. It is a sad reality of our climate that our last night in the teens (19ºF in Glenshire) was June 10 and our first day in the 90º's (91ºF at Villager) was June 16.  The first big fire in Plumas County started on June 30. And so this summer has gone. We are all hoping, longing for, and looking foreward to, a long moist fall and a heavy wet winter.

Villager Nursery is OPEN for the growing season, seven days a week. Our hours change with the climatic seasons. Historically, our "frost free period" is July 15-August 15 (less than 15% chance of frost). Our growing season is relatively short so getting started as soon as possible is always important. There is no BEST time to plant and there is no BAD time to plant (other than the old saying: "when is the best time to plant a tree?.... Ten years ago"). The best time to plant is today. It is inconvenient to plant in the middle of winter but the plants are almost always happier in the ground than in a pot. IF you need something or have questions, PLEASE give us a call.

Villager Nursery is open, roughly, mid-March through late December with all the Christmas accoutrements...   Even through mid-winter, someone is usually here, IN the shop, most days (paperwork, plants, and shop-cat needs love). We don't want to let anyone down, so if you need something (plant / product) or have questions, PLEASE call or send-us an e-mail (we check them almost every evening - don't use FB messenger... we do not check that).  We tend to be busy in our compressed seasons but we'll get back to you as soon as we possibly can.

2019 Sierra Mountain Gardening

Spring Classes and Workshops

Educated and experienced botanists, arborists, plant-lovers and garden professionals share their knowledge and understanding to help your mountain gardens succeed.

The folks at Villager Nursery have decades of personal and vicarious mountain and high Sierra gardening experiences to share. “We’ve killed thousands of plants in our own gardens so that our clients won’t have to”. Before beginning your own experiments in creating Mountain Gardens, learn from the many trials and triumphs of others.

MOST Seminars are held in the nursery @ Villager Nursery, 10678 Donner Pass Road, Truckee. Pre-registration is requested (e-mail, facebook) but drop-ins are welcome. We like to have an idea of the number of attendees for class hand-outs or samples. Most classes are still free of charge. Some workshops occasionally have materials fees. Registration is requested for workshops.

“We’ve killed thousands of plants in our own gardens so that our clients won’t have to”

Since classes are outdoors behind the shop, we may cancel or re-schedule if the weather is unbearable. Dress warmly and please bring loads of questions, pictures, ideas (and samples of plants for identification etc.. after each class). The setting is informal and we would’t keep doing it if we didn’t have fun. We have benches to sit on but you are welcome to bring your own folding chair.

We post classes on facebook and in our newsletters.
