Open Hours: Late Winter - Early Spring

April in Truckee teases us. While it is a GREAT time to plant wildflowers, hardy vegetables and herbs, over-wintered dormant plants from the nursery, it is too cold to bring in trees and shrubs from warmer climes that have leaves. April's average daytime temps start near 50°F and begin May near 60°F but nighttime temperatures start near 20° and finish the month, still, well below freezing. We plant HARDY color, tough-as-nails perennials and dormant woody plants to give them strong early-season root growth.

Open Wed-Sat 10-4 *(weather dependent = if the weather is super nice and spring-like in late winter or early spring, we'll open the gate.) Closed Sun-Tue

We are cautiously opening. We have seed potatoes arriving with our usual and new selection of cold-hardy, short-season herbs and vegetable seeds (not just a random mix). Please sign-up for our VERY occasional newsletter if you are interested and/ or check our Instagram, Twitter or Facebook pages (villagernursery). Garden Centers and Nurseries are considered "essential" part of our food distribution and agricultural food production system as well as under the hardware designation. We will do our best to offer our services safely, for as long as possible.

2019 Sierra Mountain Gardening

Spring Classes and Workshops

Educated and experienced botanists, arborists, plant-lovers and garden professionals share their knowledge and understanding to help your mountain gardens succeed.

The folks at Villager Nursery have decades of personal and vicarious mountain and high Sierra gardening experiences to share. “We’ve killed thousands of plants in our own gardens so that our clients won’t have to”. Before beginning your own experiments in creating Mountain Gardens, learn from the many trials and triumphs of others.

MOST Seminars are held in the nursery @ Villager Nursery, 10678 Donner Pass Road, Truckee. Pre-registration is requested (e-mail, facebook) but drop-ins are welcome. We like to have an idea of the number of attendees for class hand-outs or samples. Most classes are still free of charge. Some workshops occasionally have materials fees. Registration is requested for workshops.

“We’ve killed thousands of plants in our own gardens so that our clients won’t have to”

Since classes are outdoors behind the shop, we may cancel or re-schedule if the weather is unbearable. Dress warmly and please bring loads of questions, pictures, ideas (and samples of plants for identification etc.. after each class). The setting is informal and we would’t keep doing it if we didn’t have fun. We have benches to sit on but you are welcome to bring your own folding chair.

We post classes on facebook and in our newsletters.

Happy Gardeners

Our staff are all avid and passionate mt. gardeners who want nothing more than to see every client succeed on their first try. Nothing gives us greater pleasure than happy returning customers who have tasted gardening triumphs. Come by and enjoy the local expertise.

The widest selection of hardy and native plants for the High Sierra, by far. Owners are botanists and plant lovers and everyone at Villager is passionate about helping customers find the right plants for their gardens. They've been at it since the '70's and have a LOT of practical experience atop their educations. "We've killed thousands of plants in our own gardens so our clients won't have to" is something we heard them say. The demonstration gardens are amazing as well.

This nursery sells many various native plants in the Truckee area. The staff are so knowledgeable and willing to assist you. Love to go here to purchase my landscaping plant needs.

This is one of the prettiest nurseries I have ever seen. They have a wide selection of plants, including trees, flowers, herbs, etc. The staff is all very friendly and knowledgeable. and are more then happy to assist customer with plant selections and give great advice of what type of plant work best for you. It seemed to me that it's prices were pretty average, not too much above or below other nurseries. It;s not a huge place, but it is very well maintained. Definitely go here if you are in need of something green for your garden.  - Insiderpages

Thank you for visiting

Botanical Nursery, Art, & Gifts. A High Sierra Garden Center

Villager Nursery is open Late March through December 22 (Christmas trees, wreaths, garland, holly, poinsettias, etc...). We are "mostly closed" in mid-winter (January and February). March and April are late winter when we begin to open again as weather, demand and common sense dictate.

While it is fine to plant trees, shrubs and bulbs ANYTIME, and plants are always happier in the ground than they are in pots, few people actually get out there and dig holes in mid-winter... we do, but that's us.

If you need anything, please call to check with us as Google, Facebook, and, gawd forbid, Yelp are not always exactly up-to-date. Even in mid-winter we'd love to help you with products, plans, bids or consulting, please contact us with your questions or for an appointment.
