Early Spring Hours

Our hours change with the climatic seasons  - always weather permitting. (Call ahead if it is snowing, just-in-case we've gone home.)

WE ARE OPEN at this time: Mon-Sat 9:30-5:30 and Sunday 10-3.

We open as climate, current weather, and client interests dictate. We have many hardy trees, shrubs and flowering perennials that have been through winter on our climatic schedule and are primed to explode with fresh growth as we warm and thaw. Loads of fresh plant material is arriving weekly now and will increase as it warms. Depending on the species, plants grown in warmer locations need days or weeks or "hardening" before they are able to tolerate Truckee's extreme temperature swings.  While hardy herbaceous perennials and many vegetables can be hardened to tolerate our freezing nights, woody plants from our growers in warmer climates do NOT adapt as quickly. We have to wait until chances of lows in the teens are much more rare in early June and that is the time we begin to bring in truckloads of new hardy trees and shrubs.

We maintain a healthy supply of tropical and indoor appropriate houseplants and bulbs, indoor gardening gear, pottery, potting soils, organic fertilizers and nutrients, as well as seeds and seed-starting supplies. We also have every plant lover's favorite present: gift certificates from your local garden center.

Villager Nursery outdoor areas are open late-winter (Mar-April) through late December depending on snow persistence. Through mid-winter, someone is usually here, IN the shop, most days (paperwork, plants, and shop-cat needs love). We don't want to let anyone down, so if you need something (plant, product, plans, bids, or consulting) or have questions, PLEASE send-us an e-mail as we check them almost every evening - (PLEASE DO NOT USE Facebook messenger. It is unmonitored).  We'll usually get back to you in a day or two or as soon as we possibly can. You can also call and leave a voice message at 530-587-0771. We tend to be rather busy in our compressed spring (May-June) season and replies may take a bit longer.  contact us

Check our Facebook Page, Instagram or the references page on this website for updates, informational sheets, class hand-outs and calendar updates. Mountain Gardening seminars will resume this Spring after an almost two year COVID hiatus.

The best time to plant is todayIt can be inconvenient to plant in the middle of winter, through snow or frozen soil, but the plants are almost always happier in the ground than they are in a pot.

For 47 years, Villager Nursery Garden Center has been serving Truckee, Tahoe and regional high Sierra mountain plant lovers, landscapers and gardeners. Villager Florist started in the original Gateway Center (next to the Gateway Motel) in 1949 (73 yrs), added outdoor plants to the mix (becoming a nursery) in 1975, and relinquished the florist in 1996 to focus exclusively on the nursery.

2019 Sierra Mountain Gardening

Spring Classes and Workshops

Educated and experienced botanists, arborists, plant-lovers and garden professionals share their knowledge and understanding to help your mountain gardens succeed.

The folks at Villager Nursery have decades of personal and vicarious mountain and high Sierra gardening experiences to share. “We’ve killed thousands of plants in our own gardens so that our clients won’t have to”. Before beginning your own experiments in creating Mountain Gardens, learn from the many trials and triumphs of others.

MOST Seminars are held in the nursery @ Villager Nursery, 10678 Donner Pass Road, Truckee. Pre-registration is requested (e-mail, facebook) but drop-ins are welcome. We like to have an idea of the number of attendees for class hand-outs or samples. Most classes are still free of charge. Some workshops occasionally have materials fees. Registration is requested for workshops.

“We’ve killed thousands of plants in our own gardens so that our clients won’t have to”

Since classes are outdoors behind the shop, we may cancel or re-schedule if the weather is unbearable. Dress warmly and please bring loads of questions, pictures, ideas (and samples of plants for identification etc.. after each class). The setting is informal and we would’t keep doing it if we didn’t have fun. We have benches to sit on but you are welcome to bring your own folding chair.

We post classes on facebook and in our newsletters.
