Since the early 1980’s Villager Nursery has used and tested many types of crop row-cover and frost fabric. We constantly use these products to protect the nursery (and our own gardens) from frosts, intense sun, drying winds, and hail storms.
We primarily use 1.5oz. N-sulate , an economical, relatively durable and versatile spun-bonded polyester row-cover offering 6-8°F protection and allowing 50% of light. We use a double layer for extra protection and have used it over gardens for weeks at a time with water, light and air passing through.
Seedlings (from indoors) need a “hardening” (adjustment) period so they can handle our intense sun, drying winds and cold. Keep two or three layers of row-cover fabric over seedlings (or new plantings) for a week or two to help them harden.
Dio-Betalon DT-550 (TufBell 3800 N) is a PVA film that gives at least 10ºF frost protection and allows 95% of light. PVA costs more but is widely considered “the most durable row-cover on the market” and DT-650 is even better.
We offer row-cover pre-cut or by the yard.
Always have frost protection fabric on hand. There is no real “average last date of frost” here in Truckee.
