Plants of the Tahoe Basin

by: Michael Graf

It’s the best pocket field guide for our area. Most of the plants in the book live in the Truckee- Donner Summit area too. The pictures and descriptions are great.

Conifers of California

by: Ronald Lanner

This book contains a wealth of information about our native conifers. The botanical illustrations and photographs are exceptional and range maps are given for each species.

Cold Climate Gardening

by: Lewis Hill

This book was written by a long time nurseryman in Vermont (Same climate zone as we are). It is one of the best general gardening books on cold climate gardening with many hints on how to extend our growing season.

Sunset Northeastern Gardening Book Published in 2001this Sunset guide is more useful to us than the “Western Garden Book” because of hardiness zoning issues.Plants rated for zones, 44-45 in the NE book live in Truckee. ( In the “western Garden Book”, but many zone ! plants do not live here.) As with all Sunset publications, the plant descriptions are very useful.

Perennial Gardening Guide

by: John Valleau

This book contains wonderful pictures and descriptions of most of the perennial flowers, ferns and grasses we carry in the nursery. As you study this book, remember it uses USDA hardiness zoning and we are zoned 3 or 4 depending on location.

The Weather Resilient Garden

by: Charles Smith

This book covers cold, ice, snow, drought, humidity (or lack thereof), salt, hail, wind, fire etc... It clearly demonstrates many techniques that we have used and taught for years.

California Master Gardener Handbook

by: UC Davis, ANR

It has chapters on soil, fertilizer, plant propagation, pests, vegetables, conversions, glossary and much more (700+ pages).
